The city of Olomouc lies on the alluvial plain of the Morava river, in the heart of the so-called Haná region of Moravia, the eastern part of the Czech Republic. Global geographic position of the town centre is 49°45´ N 17°15´ E.
The Czech Republic uses its traditional currency, the Czech crown (Kč, CZK, approximate exchange rate is: 1 EUR = 25 CZK, 1 USD = 22 CZK). Euro is accepted in several hotels, stores, and restaurants (the exchange rate may not be good, though).
Travel to Olomouc
By plane
You can easily reach Olomouc by train or by car from several nearby international airports, namely Prague Airport and Vienna International Airport.
When travelling by train, the best way to get from Prague Airport to the main railway station “Hlavní nádraží” is by the direct bus line “Airport Express” (AE). The tickets can be bought from the driver for CZK 60. You can also use the city public transport for CZK 32 anywhere in Prague. Tickets are available in marked newspaper kiosks and shops or in ticket dispensers/slot machines at the bus, tram or metro/underground stops. In such case we recommend the bus #119 to “Nádraží Veleslavín” station, then metro/underground route A to station “Muzeum” and change for route C to the main railway station “Hlavní nádraží”). Also, you can take taxi at the airport.
By train
Olomouc is an important railway intersection in the country, with several connections to other cities and towns running daily. It is comfortably accessible from Prague within two hours; the trains leave every hour or two. Trains in the Czech Republic are operated by three carriers: “České dráhy” (Czech Railways), “RegioJet” (yellow trains) and LEO Express. You can use most of the train connections without a seat reservation, however, in the “SC Pendolino” operated by “České dráhy”, all “RegioJet” and “LEO Express” trains a seat-reservation ticket is mandatory. Use IDOS for looking up a connection. Tickets can be purchased online at webpages of individual carriers or at the railway stations.
By car
The city is situated the intersection of two key national and international motorways:
From Prague (280 km far from Olomouc) preferably use motorway E50 (E65, D1) to Brno and then E462 (D1 and then R46) from Brno (80 km) to Olomouc. Or you can use motorway E67 (D11) to Hradec Králové and then motorway E442 (R35) from Hradec Králové.
From Vienna (200 km) use E58 (A4 and A6) in Austria and E65 (D2) in Slovakia to Brno.
From Ostrava (100 km) use expressway
E462 (R35).
Note that the use of Czech motorways and expressways is subjected to the motorway fee.
